| Organization Profile: | The Stokes Institute is a multi disciplinary team of some 50 scientists and engineers. The mission of the Institute is both scholarly and entrepreneurial. Students are educated and scientific articles are published, whilst technology is developed with a focus on industrial needs and enterprise creation. The fundamental competencies of the Institute in the areas of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, micro fluidics, energy management, and reliability physics. The Institute has a tradition of application of these competencies to a range of sectors including ICT, aeronautics and biotech. The Institute is particularly strong in the area of measurement, and possesses an extensive suite of measurement equipment, including macro and micro scale Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), hot wire annemometry, wind tunnels, environmental chambers, infra red thermometry, interferometry and microscopy. Material characterisation facilities are also available. An in house workshop means that measurement facilities, test specimens and prototypes can be quickly manufactured. Modelling software such as Fluent, Flotherm, Ansys and IcePack are also used within the group. Stokes collaborators’ include Nokia, IBM, Alcatel Lucent / Bell Labs, Airbus, Rolls Royce, Hewlett Packard, Eurocopter and the Joint Research Centre. The Institute has successfully collaborated on a number of European projects on a wide range of topics. | |
